Summer Project:

In this image the photo is bringing your eye to the
shoe as this is the product (the main feature)

Commercial Photography:

Commercial photography involves taking photographs for commercial use e.g. in advertisements, merchandising and product placement. Commercial photography also used in corporate brochures and leaflets, menus ect. Commercial photography is used to promote or sell a product or service.

I think in this simage the train track is simply
contrasting with the model.
Location Photography:

Overtime fashion photography has developed its own aesthetic in which the  clothes and fashions are enhanced by the presence of locations. In location photography all images in the series have a common interest within the location that fits well within the fashions that are being featured.

Studio Photography:

Studio photography is photographs taken in a studio, where you have complete control of the environment e.g lighting props... Studio photography images are often used for commercial purposes.

High-Fashion Photography:

High-fashion photography are used on mainly fashions that are produced by the leading fashion houses e.g Yves saint Laurent, Chanel, Versace est. High-fashion photography are usually featured in magazines or campaigns to promote the brand name.

Contemporary and Historical Photographers

Task 1a:

Contemporary photographers:

Astrid sterner is a photographer that has done many magazine shoots for Dazed & Confused Korea. Sterner's recent doll inspired fashion shoot "The Doll House" is what intrigued me to look further into her work as a photographer. I found this project fit well with the theme that I am hoping to include into my work this project, mannequin. The models have been portrayed as if to replicate life sized dolls, this eccentric shoot is some what inspiring to contemporary photographers. Sterner has used blank walls and rarely used props, I believe this is to make the viewer purely focus on the model as a whole.

Jesus De La Cruz is a Mexican photographer that focuses on portraiture and fashion photography. His project "Mannequin Affair" is quite a theatrical series, which is shown as a story using models portrayed as living mannequins. This shoot is studio based, using barely any props that I believe is to ensure there are no distractions from the models or story being told. I find his photographs to be daring, dramatic and intriguing, something a contemporary photographer needs to grasp the attention of the intended audience.

Historical photographers:

Irving Penn is an influential and iconic American photographer focusing on portraiture, still life and fashion photography. His first photograph was of a still life, consisting of a big brown leather bag, beige scarf and gloves, lemons, oranges, and a huge topaz. It was published as the Vogue cover for the issue of October 1, 1943, and launched Penn on his photographic career. Penn continued to photograph successfully for Vogue. His photographs always seem to have a clean, iconic finish.

Edward Steichen was an american fashion and portrait photographer. For his time his photographs were bold, unconventional and ahead of his time. I've noticed that Steichen used shadow in some of his work, I think this was to give his images depth and I trust this contributes to the eccentricity of his work. Through using shadow as a technique it gives the images a dramatic finish.

Evaluate:
Through looking at both historical and contemporary photographers, keeping the initial theme in mind, I have found that the historical have a way of using natural light to their advantage; to create shadows in a very theatrical way. Whereas contemporary photographers use modern techniques to form their outcome through artificial lighting or post editing.

Location Photography 1b

Task 1b

Location Photography:

Architectural Photography is a broad subject, including everything from skyscrapers to shacks. Everywhere we go, we are surrounded by some sort of architecture on a daily basis. Many photographers use scale as a concept when shooting architectural photographs, as it gives you an interesting outcome. Others only use small parts , not using the architecture as a whole. Many architectural photographers include: Ezra Stoller, Berenice AbbottEugène AtgeIwan BaanBernd, Hilla BecherLucien HervéCandida Höfer to name a few.

Urban Photography is similar to street photography in that it takes place in an inner city environment but it differs from street photography in that it may or may not have people included in the image. Urban photos often take buildings, or rather the urban landscape itself as the main subject. Photographers include Nicholas Goodden, Ronya Galka to name a few.

Fashion Photography

Still Life Photography
Rural Photography

Evaluate:
Through looking at location photography, keeping fashion photography in mind, has helped me greatly in this project as fashion photography has been a completely new concept to me. It has shown me that new ways to create depth to an image, new techniques which I think will help me when photographing fashion photography in the future.

Task 2 Photographic Techniques and Lenses

Task 2

Lenses and techniques :
Wide-angle lenses are a great choice for photographing environmental portraits, where you want to show a person within a specific context. However, wide-angle lenses used close-up will distort facial features and create unflattering pictures.

A standard lens or a short telephoto lens is a better choice for portraits. The classic portrait focal lengths for a full-frame camera are 50mm, 85mm prime lenses and a 70-200mm zoom. These will help to compress features and provide a more natural-looking result.
A macro lens used in macro or "close-up" photography is any lens that produces an image on the focal plane that is the same size or larger than the subject being imaged. This configuration is generally used to image close-up very small subjects.
Zoom lenses, have a focal length that varies as internal elements are moved, typically by rotating the barrel or pressing a button which activates an electric motor. Commonly, the lens may zoom from moderate wide-angle, through normal, to moderate telephoto; or from normal to extreme telephoto.
fisheye lens is an ultra wide-angle lens that produces strong visual distortion intended to create a wide panoramic or hemispherical image.
The effect bokeh is created through the shapes that are out of focus in the image, it is usually created from lit objects to give a more effective technique.I think a 50mm lens would help form bokeh, with an fnumber of around 2.8. Through research i have found to increase the effect of bokeh distance between the background and subject needs to be greater.
To form a silhouette a subject needs to be in front of a source of light be that artificial or natural e.g. the sun. this technique is quite easy to create,  although I think more thought needs to be given the composition to make a more interesting image.

Location Photography Techniques

Location Photography Techniques:
Harmonising
Contrasting

Colour is used excessively in any type of photography, as it can can create contrast along with harmonising an image. Using colours to create contrast using colour you must use colours opposite each other on the colour wheel for example: Blue and Orange, Red and Green and Yellow and Purple. This is also using warm and cool colours against each other. If you are wanting to create a harmonious photograph using colours, try to stick with colours in the same groups for example: blues and purples, reds and yellows.

Composition could create harmony through sticking with traditional photographic methods such as, the rule of thirds or the golden section. If the subject is arranged unusually or in a unconventional way this creates contrast in the composition of the image, this technique is used regularly as it is thought to create a different more eye-catching image. Though if trying to create a sharp, iconic image many photographers stick to the more conventional methods.

Changing perspective can have completely different effects on every photo taken, using the same subject you can see just through changing perspective, the image is immediately changed. This could be useful when wanting to create a feeling from the viewer.

Weather is an excellent way to give effect to your image, as it can mean the setting as whole can make you feel completely different. If you are wanting a moody looking scene then using heavy clouds, mist or fog for effect in an image can work and give a stunning effect overall. The appearance of the location you choose can change in look depending on the weather of the location and the lighting it is giving off.

Diptych

Diptych.

A diptych is two images that somehow link together, often it is to tell a story. You can use location, colour or subject to create a connection. With colour you can either use colours that contrast to give you an exaggerated image or use colours that harmonise with each other. In my case I have chosen to use both location and harmonising colours to make my diptych, although I have changed my subject drastically from using a model to photographing still life.

Still Life

Still Life:

For my still life shoot I have chosen to take photographs of both shoes and jewellery. For this shoot I have taken my images indoors, but in the future I would like to explore further into outdoor still life. I found this shoot very successful and would like to look into this type of photography in the future.

Model vs. mannequin

First Shoot: Mannequin vs Model
Contact Prints:

This is a diptych of "Model vs. Mannequin" was taken through positioning the mannequin keeping in mind that my model would soon be in the same position. I think that this is a successful diptych as I got the same surroundings with the mannequin as I did with the model.

I don't think that this diptych was as successful as it could be
if i were to shoot his again I would work more with angles,
I don't think this shot was very flattering to the model due to the low
angle it was taken at.
